May I suggest to everyone testing new patches to do so on the latest downloadable, clean/unmodified version of LFS? I sometimes notice problems posted here relating to 3rd party add-ons which have nothing to do with core LFS. These might have the effect of potentially slowing down bug hunts or simply adding another layer of meaningless posts or confusion to the test patch thread.
I think that if LFS (or any other sim) actually got to the point where the only marked difference between the sim and the simulated was that you couldn't actually die from some horrible crash, that would be pretty damn awesome. I can't expect something like that in my lifetime.. I think any sim over the next 100 years will necessarily diverge from reality over many finer points of detail, but it's still pretty interesting to think about how close things could get without it becoming silly, as Tristan points out. Imagine future tools that would allow people to build their own virtual engines and cars from the ground up, with materials that are physically accurate for properties such as strengh, weight, stiffness and so on. Maybe simulated crash testing software for new cars is already bringing us closer to this possibility?
Also...
(I was going to write something about connecting simulations and fun, but I'm too tired now and I couldn't find a way to close my thoughts on this. Maybe another day).
I'm using the 186.18 drivers here, with no problems other than a rare slowdown in parts (seems to be related to memory, but resolves after a short while). I'm also finding that Arma runs better under Windows 7 (64 bit)- on a fresh install of the RC on a new partition the game is noticeably smoother than under Vista- but it's the only program I have running in 7 at the moment..
I'd suggest turning off all post processing, because even on low my framerate suffers with it on. The post processing seems only viable for taking screenshots.. on full the whole background gets blurred out making it almost impossible to see enemies in the distance- a totally non sensical effect. The great thing about having no post processing is you'll still get nice effects with it off. HDR effects still work well, the sky has a nice blooming effect when the sun goes behind clouds, you still get sun glare, and I'm pretty sure I've noticed a blurring effect when you get too close to an explosion. The post processing only seems to enhance in a negative way the effects which are already there.
I'm also surprised how well the demo's running after all the horror stories and depressing graphics benchmarks floating around the net. I'm running max texture settings, full AF and low AA @1920 x 1200... decided normal settings work best for everything else. Also turned off all post processing (personal preference as much as anything)- the game runs smooth and looks fantastic. Just running around with your squad feels great.. the countryside has a really solid feel about it- perfect setting to play soldiers in.
I was slightly put of by some bad voice acting at the start of the first mission (inside the chopper). It sounds like they recorded the guy on the first run through of his lines, it's pretty bad Then when the soldiers started jabbering in their robot voices I became really turned off. After a while though the strange syntheticness wears off and is much less noticeable. I wonder if there are any mods out there which try to improve the voices?
Overall I'm really looking forward to sinking my teeth into this
That reminds me.. In Turkish gas is spelt gaz. Back here in Aus there's a clothing store called Gazman. But gaz in Turkish also means farts... so everytime my girlfriend and I walk past Gazman we can't help but laugh.
The latest patch has helped smooth out performance for some people. Reading up on the forum, it seems to me that the game is CPU limited rather than GPU, so looking at overclocking or upgrading your CPU may be a smart option. Having said that, oddly those with really fast machines (overclocked i7 etc) are still having troubles.
I was looking at newer gfx cards (was thinking about getting a gtx 275) but I think I'll give the demo a spin first and see what happens. I need more cooling on my Q6600 anyway, with the store bought overclock of 3GHz I'm finding that my temps are going into the 80c mark at load, and that doesn't sound good to me
I'm pretty keen on Arma II.. don't play much in the way of war games but I thoroughly enjoyed BF2, and next to Arma 2 Battlefield looks positively cartoonish (not that it was exactly striving for realism in the first place, but anyway). Arma 2 looks intense..
Has anybody been able to check out the game so far? What do you think?
I've also found LFS looks great on larger monitors- in fact the default textures seem to work better on a larger monitor than on my old 17 inch monitor for example, where I was always finding faults and picking nits. That's almost counter intuitive to me because I've always appreciated how good LFS looks when you shrink an ingame screenshot down to the size of a banner ad, like in the top right of the forum here.. the images looks almost real because less texture detail is needed. On a large monitor everything is laid bare, but the graphics still hold up pretty well.
The biggest graphical improvement to come along recently are the updated interiors. They take up a good portion of screen space- they don't shift around a lot unlike the external track environment, so good interior textures and modeling can and did really help lift the presentation.
Still looking forward to seeing LFS evolve over the next few years. Mainstream computers are extremely fast these days, and mid range gfx cards are getting cheaper, so I hope the gfx engine (as well as physics) can go through some fundamental changes. From what I can gather Scawen still works on LFS on an older computer.. a new system might inspire him to work on more complex physics and graphics solutions.
Good to hear I'm also doing some shopping for a new GFX card.. looking for something which may just be able to handle Arma II. I've never played the previous games before and I'd not seen anything about the new Operation Flashpoint. Arma 2 looks astounding, on a whole new scale- but I hear there are some problems as well. I also hear that it eats graphics cards
TBH I didn't really understand where all the negativity towards Crysis was coming from. I played it after all the hype and hoopla had died down, and found it a very entertaining and immersive experience. You might also like Warhead, but I'd play through the orig first. FarCry 2 has really nice GFX but the gameplay somehow falls short, considering the freedom you are given, your abilities and the reactive environment. I just uninstalled it today as I was fed up with it.
If you've never played any of the Stalker games, I'd recommend taking a look. Graphics probably aren't cutting edge by todays standards, but the atmosphere is incredible. I also recommend reading 'Roadside Picnic' if you can get your hands on it- the book which originally inspired both the movie and the game. It's a great accompaniment to the game as it helps to bring you closer to the mindset of the wise and hardened Stalker, and fleshes out the underlying vibe of 'The Zone' in a way that only good literature can do.
Some other gfx intensive titles you may like..
PT Boats (looks interesting- not out yet. DX10 gfx are nice. There's a benchmark to test your rig in the link)
X3 - Terran Conflict (if you have the time and like big ships in space, this might be for you. It's a fairly complex game.. lots to chew on).
Fallout 3 - Great game with TONS of environmental and narrative detail.
err.. iRacing?
I don't get to play many games these days but I've just found Plants Vs Zombies. By no means will this stress your new card, but it's fantastic nonetheless.
It's bizarre to think of dinosaurs running around at the same time as events portrayed in the bible, but it does put a cool visual spin on things. Actually, if this is legitimate thinking in religious circles I can't understand why christian groups haven't used the dinosaur thing as a recruitment aid for children- everyone knows that kids love dinosaurs, right? It would make bible school a whole lot more fun and it would also make a great movie! The potential is huge!!
House (only started watching this year, really enjoying it)
Lost (original but starting to drag on)
Simpsons (A classic, still funny)
Southpark (Love Cartman, Randy and Butters)
Ideal (well made UK show)
Thank God You're Here (Aussie show about throwing actors into random situations to adlib)
Nip Tuck (was fun for awhile)
Wipeout (for mindless oblivion)
I saw the last part of that episode first (where the christian woman was going nuts at home) and I had to see what led up to her reaction . Watching on the internet, the whole show turned out to be fairly interesting portrayal of the two womens abilities to respond to social changes... Hardline evangelical christian mindset mum scored 0 points and then went into total meltdown mode towards the end of the show- the new agey mom fared much better. As much as I hate new age stuff, it's obviously a much better choice in terms of being able to get along with the neighbours.
Sounds like you're the one in need of a lesson on context. Anyway, you'll be the first person on my ignore list- you show up all over this forum... I don't think I've ever read a mature post from you- and if I have it's been long since drowned out by all the childish crap you endlessly write.
